Professional Development Meeting
"Stressed/Desserts" (November 12, 2007)

Central Georgia APICS Chapter  and the American Society for Quality (ASQ) had a joint Professional Dinner Meeting on Monday 12, November 2007 at the Olive Garden in Macon Georgia.

The meeting was opened by Norval Johnston, ASQ Section Chair, at 7:20 PM.  He gave a few brief announcements of upcoming ASQ meetings and wanted to encourage future joint meetings like the one tonight with APICS.  He also announced the ASQ scholarship that is awarded yearly and the requirements.

Norval then introduced Sandra Harvey, APICS Chapter President-Elect, who told everyone that Tyco and YKK were two of the companies represented tonight by their group.  She gave some APICS announcements and also spoke about entertaining the idea of doing more joint meetings in the future with ASQ.

The presentation for the evening was “Stressed / Desserts” (learning how to change your stress into desserts) by Alyce Kemp DeWitt, employed by the South Carolina Department of Mental Health as G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital’s Community Services Coordinator.

Ms. DeWitt opened her presentation by giving some personal examples of how she has learned to make desserts from stressed events in order to have a fulfilling life.  She emphasized how stress affects us mentally, physically, and spiritually.  Ninety percent of our stress is caused by our attitude toward life, and we can be contagious by being positive.  She gave many examples to help the audience visualize what stress can do.

The presenter named four attributes in order to get through life’s trials and tribulations.  She called them “Personal Talents for Stress Relief”:

1.  Motivation – it takes this to work and improve on stressors in your life.  Stop blaming others.  You can be what you want to be, but it takes work and accepting responsibility.

2.  Humor – it is so important to have some deep belly laughs.  Try to find humor in life and enjoy it with others.

3.  Tears – it is OK to cry and grieve.  Everyone is different.

4.  Communication – learn to be open and honest in relationships in all aspects of your life.

Ms. DeWitt distributed handouts to the audience with information on stress reduction, signs of excess stress, stress diet, ideas to reduce stress in your life, a page on shock to acceptance of loss or major tragedy in life, and a self-test.

The presentation was a nice reminder to treat ourselves well in order to sustain a healthy life (“Live Well, Love Much, and Laugh Often”).

Norval Johnston handed out a brief Customer Satisfaction Survey at the end of the meeting for everyone to fill out and turn in with their feedback and ideas for future meetings.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:20 PM.
