Professional Development Meeting
Fairview Park Hospital (November 13, 2008)

On Thursday, 11/13/2008, Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin Georgia hosted a Professional Development Meeting for APICS of Central Georgia and the Middle Georgia Section of the American Society for Quality.   Below are some notes from this event written by Keith Flury (CEGA VP of Marketing).

Fairview Park Hospital is a member of the HCA network of hospitals, headquartered in Nashville Tennessee.  Fairview Park is a state-of-the-art, 190-bed acute care facility providing community healthcare services including a 24-hr Emergency Room, inpatient and outpatient surgery options, and rehabilitation therapy services. In addition, Fairview provides specialty services through facilities such as the Sleep Center at Fairview Park, the Same Day Surgery Center, the Heart Center at Fairview Park, and the Women’s Imaging Center.

Fairview Park has 700 full and part-time employees as well as 105 active and consulting medical staff. Fairview Park is also accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Presentations were made by:

·          Tracie Morgan, Director of Marketing – Introduction to Fairview Park Hospital

·          Chad Mosley, Pharmacist – Control and regulation of pharmaceuticals

·          Larry Polk, Laboratory Manager – Inventory Control of testing supplies and specimens

·          Ed Moore, Director of Supply Chain – Physical distribution of supplies

The presentations were very informative.  It was interesting to learn how the inventory control techniques in hospitals are similar to those practiced in industry:

·          Min/max replenishment

·          Reorder point replenishment

·          Consignment programs

·          Point of use storage systems

·          Bar-code scanning systems

They are also faced with many of the same challenges and difficulties.

·          Overstock

·          Inventory Shortages

·          Supplier lead-times

·          Immediate customer requirements

·          Inventory accuracy

·          Limited product shelf-life

·          Weekly physical inventory

·          Special handling equipment & procedures

Additionally, the medical industry is subject to strict government regulations, and frequent external audits, to ensure compliance.

After the presentations, the Fairview Park staff closed the meeting with a Q&A session.

APICS of Central Georgia would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff of Fairview Park for their hospitality, and sharing their insight into their operation, and the logistics of the hospital supply chain.
